Career development can help you figure out your educational strengths and support needs, how to best change jobs, learn new skills or think about going back to school. Educational services, offered at schools and mental health programs, can assist you in obtaining a GED, certificates, degrees, and other job qualifications. Staff can help link you to specific programs, obtain financial aid, and get accommodations that may be needed at the workplace. Education and career planning can take place before you get your first job, while you are employed, or when you are ready for a change.

The GED, or General Education Development crediential, is a diploma awarded by the New York State Education Department for students who have not graduated from high school. To get this diploma, you must be at least 16 years. You will need to pass five tests in specific subject areas and obtain a minimum score of 410 on each test or an average standard score of at least 450 across all five tests (scores range from 200 to 800 for each test). College standards for admission vary, but most schools have policies for entry for students with a non-traditional diploma, such as the GED. The NYC Department of Education Office of Adult and Continuing Education is the major NYC provider of educational services offering GED and other educational and vocational classes to adults 21 and over.

If you are looking to focus on a particular vocation or trade and really want to work, it might make sense to attend a specialized course that would prepare you for a specific career. Through vocational training or trade schools you can earn a degree, certification or diploma in any number of different career areas. There are a many trade school programs in NYC that will prepare you in the fields of accounting, medical and health care, business, computers, media, criminal justice, design, fashion, culinary arts, and more.
